What would Thanksgiving be without a little football? This weekend is chocked full of great games for Football lovers, and chances are, where there’s football, there’s beer. We think you should make those beers great local beers, so we asked leading radio personality and noted local beer lover Rick Rice of Rock 104.9 to tell us what he’ll be drinking this weekend when he’s enjoying the games. Rick tells us:
“Thanksgiving is easily my favorite holiday, with the perfect combination of family, food, and football. It’s the one time each year that I’m guaranteed to see my parents, who travel from Buffalo each year to celebrate with my wife, Stacy, and I.
The eating and drinking starts early, high noon, which factors into the beer selection. High gravity is not the way to go if one plans on being awake when dinner is served. Also playing a part in the selection process is the fact that Dad is an old-school, mass produced, light beer guy, if I’m not around to provide some other options. Rule of thumb; nothing strong, nothing hoppy. So I have two for him to choose from, Mama’s Little Yella Pils from Oskar Blues, and Asheville Brewing’sRocket Girl.
As for me, the beer fridge is always stocked with a nice variety, and I’ll enjoy several over the course of the day The first pour will be Christmas Jam Session Ale by Sierra Nevada (with a nod to ABC’s Doug Riley). Second, Hi-Wire Brewing’s Bed of Nails Brown. And finally, with dinner, Highland Brewing’s Cold Mountain.
Three football games, three local beers, and three waves of food (appetizers, main meal, & dessert). My beloved, sad sack Buffalo Bills have only played twice on Turkey Day, losing miserably both times, and are thankfully not scheduled this year, which is for the best. That could ruin my appetite!”
And since mentioned the Christmas Jam Ale (we’ll have more on that next week), we wanted to mention that Rock 104.9 will be giving away Saturday night tickets to the Christmas Jam beginning Monday, December 4th. Be sure to tune in and listen for your chance to win.
Thanks for the great recommendations, Rick. All solid choices, and safe travels to your family this holiday weekend!
