Catawba Valley Brewing (Morganton)
Morganton, NC based Catawba Brewing Company has been contributing to Western North Carolina’s craft beer and brewing history since it’s founding in 1999. For their 15 year anniversary, Catawba has been making some bold business moves designed to reinforce the the company’s core strengths in the Asheville market. What started out as a few hodge-podge pieces from a failed Boulder, Colorado brewery gathering dust in Billy Pyatt and wife Jetta’s garage has turned into one of the oldest and most trusted breweries in Western North Carolina.
One of the first area craft brewers to offer beers in cans, Catawba’s Firewater IPA, White Zombie, and Farmer Ted’s Cream Ale have long been a popular choice to stock the coolers on fishing and camping expeditions (look for in grocery stores and area bottle shops).
Signature Brew: Of Catawba’s year round brews, we especially love the White Zombie White Ale. Originally named when it was first introduced as a Halloween seasonal brew, White Zombie proved popular with patrons for its refreshing taste and quickly moved to Catawba’s year round line up. Zombie is made in the Belgian Witbier tradition, using unmalted wheat to create the light body and white sheen. Additions of coriander and orange peel give Zombie a fruity and spicy character, while the hops are subtle and lightly detected. And at a reasonable 5.1% ABV, you can enjoy a few without worrying about becoming a part of the walking dead.
