Another great week for craft beer lovers on the Asheville Ale Trail with lots of new releases and events. This week, Catawba Brewing releases their seasonal King Winterbolt Winter Ale. Released both in kegs and cans throughout the area, Winterbolt is brewed in the traditional English style using crystal and black malts to give it a rich, dark color and sweet depth. That sweetness is balanced by East Kent Goldings hops added during the boil, along with an American-sized dose of dry-hopped Cascade and Sorachi Ace. The result is a 7% ABV brew with coffee, toffee, and roasted flavors accentuated by a citrusy and spicy hop kick.
Kevin Sondley, head brewer at Catawba Brewing Co., describes the beer as “sure to warm you when the snowflakes fly!” which makes it the perfect release for winter (though with last week’s weather, we’re not sure when that will be). This marks the second appearance of King Winterbolt Ale, having made its original debut last year about this time as Catawba’s very first canned seasonal. The brew was a big hit last year, so in addition to the taproom release this Saturday, expect to see His Majesty on store shelves everywhere you find Catawba beers starting this weekend.
At the Biltmore Village Taproom, Catawba will be offering complementary hors d’oeuvre that, well, complement the beer and live music starts up at 6 pm with Fritz and the Crooked Beat.
