SUPPORT: TOUBAB KREWE
Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound.
Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their latest release, STYLO, (March 2nd, 2018). What Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Terrence Houston (drumset), Drew Heller (guitar, organ), Justin Kimmel (bass, keys), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, Congas, Dundun, Sangban, Kinkini) have wrought on STYLO reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their last studio album, TK2.
This is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview, something they’ve exhibited in their decade and a half of heavy gigging, including regular appearances at major U.S. festivals like Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Rothbury and Wakarusa, and abroad at such legendary gatherings as the Festival In The Desert in Essakane, Mali. Whether on their own or collaborating with luminaries like the Last Poets’ Umar Bin Hassan or Uncle Earl’s Rayna Gellert, Toubab Krewe has already earned the attention and respect of a broad musical community.
Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, no doubt picked up during the group’s travels to study and live in Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali. But what truly differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they’ve learned instead of simply recreating tradition. Toubab Krewe carves out a new trail honoring the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary.
SUPPORT: NATURAL BORN LEADERS
Natural Born Leaders is a fresh and appetizing indie- Rock, funk, HipHop band formed in the mountains of Asheville North Carolina in 2016. Their music is a melodic representation of many different genres of music, past, present, and current. NBL’s lyrics are real, heart felt, and driven by love and fear, and at many times a conversation between those emotions. The at times intense grooves carry with them hooks that’ll get stuck in your brain for days to come. NBLs rhythm section is hard hitting, funky, and tight. The band is cut from the type of stuff that moves peoples feet. The tunes display heavy links from jazz, blues, Afro-Latin, and Metal.
NBL was featured on NPR’s weekend edition with Scott Simon after garnering the attention of the judges of Bob Boilens Tiny Desk Contest in June of 2018. NBL has since been consistently featured in media and touring locally, regionally, and nationally.
The first recorded studio EP by Natural Born Leaders, “About time” is currently available for purchase and streaming across all major outlets. The band is currently in the process of recording their second EP with producer Patrick Doyle at Echo Mountain recording studio in Asheville, NC set for a release in the spring of 2019.
If you are in the search of music that will make you think, cry, feel, or dance. NBL is for you. NBL is a family and at their shows you become a part of that magic dynamic!
LATE NIGHT BAND #1: PINK MERCURY
Mercury is the only liquid metal.
Led by shapeshifting vocalist Stephanie Morgan (formerly of pop-noir powerhouse stephaniesid, and Stephanie Morgan and The Mercurists), Pink Mercury makes exploratory music within sparse structures, only some of which are predetermined, resulting in an art-pop-rock-dance-centered, but ultimately genre-bending, conversation.
“The band conjures spirits. Bjork, Pink Floyd, Billie Holiday, PJ Harvey, Aerosmith, Cocteau Twins… while maintaining sovereignty.” — Wasteland
LATE NIGHT BAND #2: THE SNOZZBERRIES
Swirling psychedelia, funk and fusion in lively whirlwinds of sonic pleasure, The Snozzberries are Asheville’s freakiest musical pioneers.
Since their formation in fall of 2017, The Snozzberries have been building their name as the Southeast’s most electrifying live band. Their infectious grooves have been unavoidable for Asheville concert goers, who caught them headlining the Asheville Music Hall, opening for The Werks, and hosting night one of the Disco Biscuits after-parties. They’ve also expanded across the region to much acclaim.
The Snozzberries newest release, “No Evil,” comes out in January 2019. Recorded at The Eagle Room in Asheville, NC, these studio cuts reflect the band’s unique dichotomy of thoughtful bliss and visceral excitement. The boys hit the road this spring, including a performance at Sweetwater 420 Fest in Atlanta. Come join the party where the jams are fresh and the vibes are dialed in just right.
