Hops farming is a bit of a new endeavor here in WNC, but there are a few farms that are growing and harvesting hops to be used in our local beer. Operating for more than 5 years, the Hop N Blueberry Farm is one of those local farms growing hops, and was one of the first farms in North Carolina farms to produce hops commercially. Since its founding, they’ve gained the favor and flavor of a variety of local brewers, including the Black Mountain based Pisgah Brewing and the new Lookout Brewing Co.
Van Burnette, owner of the Hop N Blueberry farm, is the 5th generation of his family to work the farm, but the first to grow hops. Now the family offers full farm tours which includes visiting and touring the yard where the hops are grown.
Because of this, owner Van Burnette created a tour to show beer enthusiasts how hops are grown. His tour offers a unique, first hand perspective to people interested growing their own hop, or just learning more about how their beer is made. You’ll learn about a variety of different hops, and how to care for them. After the tour, head down to one of the Black Mountains breweries, just a few miles from the farm, and sample some beer made with the very hops you were just touring. As part of #NCBeer Month events, tours will be offered every Saturday in April starting at 2 p.m.
For directions to the farm, check out their webpage at hopnblueberryfarm.com. Hop to it!
