In the land of four seasons, we welcome the many signs of spring that are appearing throughout WNC…birds chirping in the trees, dogwoods in bloom, pollen counts skyrocketing (not too happy about that one), and this week’s summer weather which proffers the return of the Boys of Summer. This week, The Asheville Tourists, Asheville’s very own championship minor league baseball team, celebrates the start of the season with their home opener against the Delmarva Shorebirds Thursday at 7pm.
Thursday means it’s a Thirsty Thursday Special event, where the regular stuff is only a buck for 12 oz pours, but more importantly the craft beers are ONLY $2!! You read that right…..$2 for craft beer. Thirsty Thursdays will continue throughout the season, with 12 scheduled for the entire season. Here’s something we didn’t know about these events when we started researching for this post: the term ‘Thirsty Thursday’ was actually trademarked by the Tourists in 1995, which (and we mean no disrespect to the team by saying this) may well be the most valuable thing the Tourists own! If they’re getting a fee every time a bar or restaurant uses that term…
This year at McCormick field, Asheville Ale Trail all-stars returning from last are New Belgium Brewing, Highland Brewing Co, Sierra Nevada, Oskar Blues , and French Broad Brewing, with Tourist newcomer Catawba Brewing Co. adding White Zombie and Farmer Ted to the Tourists’ starting craft beer lineup.
During the regular season, we’re told craft beer prices will be $5.75 for 16 oz pours and $7 in a 24-ounce cup ( $4.75 and $6 .00 for regular domestics). When compared with Major League Stadiums, where some are charging as much as $8 for 12 ozs. of swill, we’ll put the league champion Asheville Tourists baseball experience up there with any of those big city teams!
