The sour beer movement is spreading like wildfire across America. Since inception, Wicked Weed’s brewpub offered Asheville sour and wild brews on draught. Their second project, the Funkatorium, will focus solely on these styles and house the largest sour and wild barrel aging program in the Southeast with 16 taps and 2 traditional single barrel cask sours.
The Funkatorium is located just three blocks from the brewery’s flagship restaurant (page 21) in downtown Asheville.
The Power of Sour
The Funkatorium, which opened its doors October 2014, offers a completely different vibe than Wicked Weed’s original brewpub. Designed to have a distinctly Belgian feel, this Old World meets New World fusion of traditional craft and forward thinking creativity is the perfect backdrop for delving into the world of sour and wild beers.
Housing over 500 barrels, the Funkatorium provides a space to drink craft beer while immersing oneself in the barrels where these beers age. Knowledgable staff, unique farmhouse style ales, and a rotating, menu of small plates, transports beer lovers from Asheville to the streets of Belgium.
